For some, seeking fertility treatment and starting the path toward their fertility goals can be filled with joy, excitement, and hope. However, for individuals and couples facing fertility challenges, it can also be marked by frustration, disappointment, and confusion. Fertility treatments have come a long way in recent years, but unfortunately, misconceptions and misinformation still persist. In this blog post, we aim to debunk some of the common misconceptions surrounding fertility treatment, providing clarity and empowering individuals with accurate information.

Misconception 1: Fertility treatment is only for older individuals
Fact: While it's true that age can impact fertility, fertility treatment is not exclusive to older individuals. People seek fertility treatment for a variety of different reasons, not simply infertility. People of all ages can benefit from fertility treatments, regardless of their reproductive age, to meet their specific fertility goals. Fertility issues can arise at any stage in life and be due to various factors, such as medical conditions, hormonal imbalances, or genetic factors, and seeking treatment earlier may increase the chances of success.
Misconception 2: Fertility treatment is only for those experiencing infertility
Fact: The misconception that fertility treatment is exclusively for those experiencing infertility is not accurate. While fertility treatment does provide hope and solutions for individuals or couples facing fertility challenges, it also caters to a broader range of individuals and situations. Fertility treatments can be beneficial for single individuals, same-sex couples, the LGBTQI+ population, or those with medical conditions that may impact their ability to conceive naturally. Additionally, fertility treatments encompass various options beyond traditional in vitro fertilization (IVF), such as egg freezing, donor gametes, and surrogacy, which allow individuals to proactively preserve their fertility or build a family through alternative means. Fertility treatment is a versatile and inclusive field that supports diverse paths to parenthood, dispelling the notion that it is solely for those experiencing infertility.
Misconception 3: Fertility treatment always involves invasive procedures
Fact: While some fertility treatments and diagnostic tests may involve invasive procedures, not all are intrusive. Depending on the individual's fertility goals and what the patient is presenting medically and fertility-wise, treatments can range from lifestyle modifications, medication, timed intercourse, intrauterine insemination (IUI), etc... The approach taken is determined by the individual's specific situation and medical advice. Speak openly with your provider about potential alternative options if invasive procedures or testing is recommended and would like to be avoided, if possible.
Misconception 4: Fertility treatment is always successful
Fact: Unfortunately, fertility treatment is not a guaranteed pathway to parenthood. Success rates vary depending on factors such as age, any infertility diagnoses, and individual health. It's important to have realistic expectations and understand that multiple treatment cycles might be necessary before achieving your fertility goals. Consulting with a fertility specialist can provide a clearer picture of the chances of success based on individual circumstances.
Misconception 5: Fertility treatment always results in multiple pregnancies
Fact: While it's true that certain fertility treatments can increase the likelihood of twins or triplets, the actual data suggests that compared to conception occurring without fertility treatment, we really only see maybe a 1-2% increase. Advancements in reproductive medicine have allowed for more precise control and customization of fertility treatments, reducing the risk of multiples. Fertility specialists carefully monitor treatment protocols to minimize the chances of multiples and ensure the health and safety of all individuals involved.
Misconception 6: Fertility treatment is only for heterosexual couples
Fact: Fertility treatment is not limited to heterosexual couples. Individuals and couples from diverse backgrounds, including same-sex couples and individuals of all gender identities, can explore various fertility treatment options. Assisted reproductive technologies, such as donor sperm, eggs, or embryo, gestational surrogacy, and fertility preservation, have provided new possibilities for building families, irrespective of sexual orientation or relationship status.
Misconception 7: Fertility treatment is financially unattainable
Fact: While fertility treatment can be costly, it's important to note that financial barriers are not insurmountable. Many fertility clinics offer financial assistance programs, insurance coverage, and flexible payment plans to make treatment more accessible. Additionally, exploring options such as grants, loans, and crowdfunding campaigns can help individuals and couples overcome financial constraints and pursue their fertility dreams.
(Do we wish it was cheaper? Absolutely! Does FertilitEase advocate for fertility benefits for all? 100%! Until then, make sure you explore all options and ask questions to your clinics financial coordinator... you're not the first person to ask for discounts or resources.)
Misconception 8: Fertility treatment is only for individuals with ovaries
Fact: Fertility treatment is not limited to individuals with ovaries. People of all gender identities can experience fertility challenges due to various factors or request fertility treatment assistance to meet other fertility goals such as fertility preservation (for example: freezing sperm). Speaking to infertility directly, it actually affects all individuals equally. ⅓ of patients experiencing infertility are those with ovaries, ⅓ of patients experiencing infertility are those with testicles, and ⅓ of patients experiencing infertility identify as both reproductive parties presenting an issue or the cause of infertility is completely unexplained. It's important for all reproductive parties involved to undergo fertility evaluations and work together in the treatment process.
Misconception 9: Fertility treatment is the last resort
Fact: While fertility treatment can be a solution for individuals and couples facing infertility, it doesn't mean it should be the last resort. Seeking assistance from a fertility specialist early on can help identify any potential issues and explore various treatment options. Taking a proactive approach can improve the chances of successful treatment and potentially save valuable time in the fertility journey.
Misconception 10: Fertility treatment always requires using donor eggs or sperm
Fact: While donor eggs, sperm, and embryos can be an option for some individuals and couples, it doesn't mean that every fertility treatment requires their use. Many individuals with ovaries and individuals with testicles can achieve pregnancy using their own gametes. Fertility treatments are tailored to the specific needs of each individual or couple, and the use of donor gametes is considered when it's medically necessary or a personal choice.
Misconception 11: Fertility treatment always causes permanent, severe physical and emotional side effects
Fact: While fertility treatments can involve hormonal medications and procedures, it's a misconception that they always result in permanent, severe physical and emotional side effects. While some individuals may experience side effects like bloating, mood swings, or fatigue, these are usually temporary and manageable. Fertility clinics prioritize patient well-being and work closely with individuals to minimize discomfort and provide emotional support throughout the process.
***Everyone is different. If you are experiencing any lingering emotional or physical struggles, please check in with your care team. What you're experiencing is valid, don't assume it's "normal," and you don't have to navigate it alone.
Misconception 12: Fertility treatment increases the risk of birth defects
Fact: The risk of birth defects associated with fertility treatment is generally not significantly higher than that of the general population. Technological advancements and stringent screening processes have greatly reduced the risks. Fertility clinics conduct thorough evaluations and genetic testing to ensure the health and well-being of all individuals involved, including the parents and potential children.
***No testing is 100%, unfortunately. Proactively voice any of these types of concerns to your provider and they can provide specific data for you to make informed decisions.
Misconception 13: Fertility treatment causes cancer
Fact: It is important to dispel the misconception that fertility treatment causes cancer as it is not supported by scientific evidence. Numerous studies have been conducted to investigate the potential link between fertility treatment and cancer, and the results consistently indicate that there is no causal relationship between the two. The overall risk of developing cancer as a result of fertility treatment is not higher than the general population. It is crucial to rely on accurate information and consult with healthcare providers to make informed decisions about fertility treatment without unnecessary fear of cancer risks. While fertility treatments don't cause cancer, some fertility medications have the potential of exacerbating cancerous cells; especially estrogen receptive cancer cells. It’s extremely important to complete any recommended preventative screenings such as pap smears and mammograms prior to starting treatment.
